“the new global payment solution for everyone”
Electronic Luncheon Vouchers
- a reality in Belgium
Payfair together with its issuing partners Monizze and E-kena lead the
development
of the electronic luncheon vouchers market in Belgium.

In the fall of 2010 the Belgian government approved the launch of electronic
luncheon vouchers and now they have become a reality. payfair is instrumental in the
move from paper to digital since 2 new operators in this sector – Monizze and
E-kena - will issue e meal vouchers exclusively on a payfair platform.
In Belgium 1,3 million employees receive paper luncheon vouchers as an addition to
their salary and more than 250 million paper vouchers are issued every year! This
results in a heavy administrative burden – for employers, employees and retailers –
with significant costs and inefficiencies as a consequence.
Hence the Belgian government launched a digital alternative for the paper 'cheque' –
the electronic luncheon voucher. Next to important cost reduction and efficiency
gains, the new system is well aligned to today's requirements regarding protection of
the environment, security and simplicity. Tons of paper will be saved every year and
the Card-Stop functionality of the e vouchers will significantly improve the security for
the consumer in case of loss or theft. Life will also be simpler for consumers – who no
longer have to carry paper cheques around - and merchants – who can process
payments with e vouchers like any other electronic payment.
It is, therefore, no surprise that the new system has been met with increasing
success. Although the predominant operators in the meal vouchers market continue
to issue paper vouchers – payfair is delighted to partner with Monizze and E-Kena
– 2 new operators that will exclusively issue e luncheon vouchers.
Retailer acceptance of e meal vouchers is also expanding rapidly. On December 1st
2011 Carrefour Belgium announced the acceptance of electronic luncheon vouchers.
The press release highlighted the system demonstration in the Carrefour planet in
Oudergem, where Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne gave a status update
regarding the implementation of the new luncheon voucher scheme.
payfair is very active in developing widespread acceptance by signing up all – small
and large – retailers in the food sector for payfair acceptance, thus opening up the
network for the Monizze and E-Kena e meal vouchers.
Thanks to payfair and its issuing partners Monizze and E-Kena, a growing number
of consumers and merchants will be able to enjoy the many benefits of electronic
luncheon vouchers in Belgium.
